Accessibility review checklist

A practical, WCAG-aligned checklist for a first-pass accessibility review of any website.

All resources

Visual

  • Does text meet minimum colour contrast requirements against its background?
  • Is information ever conveyed by colour alone (e.g. red text as the only error indicator)?
  • Does the site remain usable at 200% browser zoom?

Navigation & interaction

  • Can every interactive element be reached and used with keyboard alone?
  • Is there a visible focus indicator when tabbing through the page?
  • Is there a "skip to main content" link for keyboard users?

Content

  • Does every meaningful image have descriptive alt text?
  • Do headings follow a logical, nested order (H1 → H2 → H3), not skipped for visual style?
  • Do form fields have properly associated labels, not just placeholder text?

Media

  • Do videos have captions, and audio content a transcript?
  • Do auto-playing elements have an easy way to pause or stop them?

Testing

  • Has the site been tested with an actual screen reader, not just an automated scanner?
  • Have real users with access needs been involved, even informally?
